If You Believe ...

The more we stretch the muscle called compassion and generosity,
the stronger we get, the better we feel about ourselves,
the more loving we become to the world around us ...

Since that time, our collaborative efforts have raised more than $68,000 to help the families at Kenny's favorite charity located in Santa Barbara, CA.

Our 2010 Fundraiser Was a Huge Success!

With your generous donations we were able to raise more than $8,800 to support the families of Unity in our 11th year of fundraising! A very special thank you to Tom Pinch, Michele Bramlett, Cherie, Becky, Veronica, Keri and Kelly for donating items for this year's auction!

Although we are each facing our own economic challenges, the families of Unity need our support more than ever. What more precious gift can we share than to make a difference in someone's life, while at the same time showing our appreciation to Kenny by participating in this annual drive!  Our collective efforts in helping this amazing organization are not only our holiday gift to Kenny, but our way of expressing what the true sense of community and caring is all about.

About the Unity Shoppe

ImageThe Unity Shoppe, it is an organization funded completely by private, non-government aid, to help families going through financial difficulties. Unity provides these families with a monthly allotment of supplemental food and clothing year round, along with toys for the children during the holiday season.

The Unity Shoppe is set up in a "real-store" fashion, allowing families in need to "shop" for new items they may otherwise have had to go without. And because Unity helps to supplement these most basic necessities, people have the ability to continue working to pay their rent and utilities. The program helps families maintain their sense of dignity by not having to ask for public assistance or be put on welfare. In return, the families of Unity, including the children, also volunteer their time to help give back to other families serviced by The Unity Shoppe.

This web site will provide you with the opportunity to see photos of the check presentations we've made to Kenny, share the testimonials of fans who have volunteered at Unity since December, 2000, and link you right to the Unity Shoppe's web site for further information on this incredible organization.

Kenny receives a list of every single person who donates through our efforts, and it truly means so much to him! No donation is ever too big or too small ... whatever you can afford to give will go a long way in helping these very special families to have food, clothing and a new toy for their child for this holiday season!

On behalf of all of us that work together to give this special holiday gift to Kenny and the families of Unity, we would like to say THANK YOU for all of your donations this holiday season and in years past.

A Note From Kenny

Kenny writes:  Many artists, myself included, were taught that to perform for this or that cause will further our careers. And perhaps that is true. I remember Clive Davis convincing Jimmy Messina and myself to play for the T.J. Martell Gala in the first months of our career together, in order to be seen by the Industry. He was right, of course, but it was also our introduction to the idea that what goes around comes around, that there is something going on in the world bigger than our heads.

But does the artist have an "obligation" to return the favor of success by committing at least a moment of their talents to a worthy cause? I can't tell you how many times I used to be asked that question by the press. And it's a good one.

I've come to think that the real "obligation" is for the artist to simply ask him/herself that question, and then to do what feeds one's soul in that moment. Philanthropy is not necessarily for everyone. Maybe it's not time yet to step out of one's personal "cave." Maybe that person has some healing or growing to do on his/her own for a while?  Or maybe the artist has to find what cause speaks clearly to his heart first?  Does that question only apply to an artist?

TJ Martell GalaI think sooner or later, everyone has an "obligation" to find some form of service to attend to, in order to nurture their own hearts as well as those of their community's. The more we stretch the muscle called compassion and generosity, the stronger we get, the better we feel about ourselves, the more loving we become to the world around us. It is a positive feedback loop of generosity feeding self-esteem, feeding creativity, which is likely to show up in one's art. One's life. As an artist, I can say that it serves one's art to do the things that help build one's self-esteem, and learning how to share your talent with those in need is an important first step.

Life has many faces, many seasons, and no matter what season we are in, we need art to reflect back the truth, to help pull us out of the illusion of our solitude, and teach us that we are all connected, we are all essentially the same, all carrying the same load, all challenged with the same heart-aches, the same fears, and that we all need each other.
